When planning a vacation to Italy, Florence, Rome, or Venice are all travel destinations that instantly come to mind but if you really want to enjoy ‘la dolce vita’ away from the crowds, these are 7 secret Italian towns worth visiting.

Treviso in Veneto

Treviso, perhaps eclipsed by its more impressive neighbors, is like a small Venice with fewer tourists and crowds. Medieval churches, cobblestone streets, red-brick palaces and tiny old canals that connect buildings, gardens, and piazzas are part of Its historical walled center.
Thanks to its charm, Treviso is one of the walled cities of the province which are worth visiting.

Alberobello in Puglia

Alberobello is a lovely small town in the south of Italy. It is a picturesque destination home to the Trulli, cone-shaped whitewashed conical-roofed buildings that look like houses straight out of fairy tales. The village is a labyrinth of narrow streets and nice piazzas, and it also has a beautiful belvedere that offers fabulous views of the town.
Thanks to its beauty, Alberobello was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bolzano in Alto Adige

Bolzano, who has been Italian only since World War I, is located near the Dolomite Mountains and is surrounded by medieval castles and vineyards. With a medieval city center, Gothic and Romanesque churches, Bolzano has bilingual signage which gives the flavor of a city at the crossroads of Italian and Austrian cultures.

Cefalù in Sicily

Sicily is one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean, and Cefalù is perhaps the prettiest town of them all. Known for its Norman cathedral, a 12th-century fortress-like structure with elaborate Byzantine mosaics and soaring twin towers, this medieval city is a true jewel with picturesque piazzas, lovely churches, and a nice promenade just in front of the sea.

At the entrance of the village, there is a castle, named Castello Manservisi, which is characterized by a romantic style typical of the end of the XIX – beginning of the XX century.

Sperlonga in Lazio

Sperlonga, located in Lazio, halfway between Rome and Naples, is one of the nicest villages in the country.  Its white-painted houses make it a bit reminiscent of some Greek islands and are clustered together on a steep headland, the streets warren-like stairways will bring you to unexpected terraces above the sea. The old town is compact and charming, and a pleasure to explore. You can spend time admiring old palaces, the archaeological museum, gardens with plenty of flowers and the pristine beaches.
