This region, Franconian Switzerland near Nuremberg, is world famous for its high density of traditional breweries.
In Germany, there are 1,284 breweries and more than half of them (618) brew their beer in Bavaria. 201 are located in Upper Franconia and almost half are in the Franconian Switzerland region making it the largest concentration of breweries in the world.
According to the Guinness Book of Records, the small village of Aufsess in Franconian Switzerland, as measured by its number of inhabitants (1,400), has the highest brewery density (four breweries) in the entire world!
